Police team to Papua after attacks

The national police are mobilizing more resources to Papua following a series of deadly attacks that allegedly involved members of the Free Papua Movement.

"We have sent a team [to Papua], including members of the police’s internal affairs division, the Inspector General and police intelligence," police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said on Thursday.

The team would ensure that officers and logistics were capable of facing the violent surges in Papua, particularly in Puncak Regency, a remote location that could only be reached by air, he said.

A local election in Puncak regency, Papua, has been delayed following a deadly clash that claimed 19 lives, the Papua Elections Commission announced on Thursday.

The Papua Police’s public relations reportedly arranged a meeting with the General Election Commission to discuss the regency's local election dispute, which was between supporters of candidates Elvis Tabuni and Simon Alom.

Aside from the legal process, the Papua Police had previously summoned a local chief to discuss the dispute settlement process. (rpt)
